Strasbourg , November 17, 2005 (HREA) – Pop star and charity campaigner Bob Geldof and Ethiopian women’s rights activist Bogaletch Gebre are the winners of this year's Council of Europe North South Prize.

They will receive their awards from the President of the Portuguese Assembly Jaime Gama in the presence of Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio and the Chairman of the North-South Centre Claude Frey at a ceremony at the Assembly of the Republic. (21 November, 11 am ; Pal ل cio S م o Bento, Lisbon ).

The prize has been awarded every year since 1995 to two candidates who demonstrate strong and visible commitment and outstanding achievements in promoting human rights.

The North South Centre, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, was created to foster links between the different hemispheres and to promote the Council of Europe’s core values of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
