TWO students who fled to England from war-torn have been honored for their progress at the College of NW London.

At the college's annual awards day, accountancy student Hibo Habane, 22, of Strongbridge Close, Rayners Lane, won the award for the best student to have progressed from the college to a degree course, and Fatana Mohamady, 21, from Stratton Close, Canons ParkEdgware, was presented with the Tony Holyhead Award for her progress in English.

A refugee from Somaliland, recently-married Hibo scored a top first in three of her six papers at the end of the first year of her accounting and finance degree at Middlesex University's Hendon campus.

She is tipped to get a first when she graduates, and in the meantime is working in the college's finance department two days a week.
Fatana and her sister fled from family tragedy in Afghanistan when it was ruled by the Taliban.

Her award, which commemorate's the college's former principal who died in May, is for an outstanding student who has overcome major difficulties in progressing from Brent's adult education classes to the college.

Plumbing student Patrick Enright, 18, from Harrow Weald, collected an academic achievement award. He recently won the UK Copper Board's regional young plumber of the year title.

The College of NW London has campuses in Wembley Park and Willesden.
