Baidowa, February 11, 2006 – The Somaliland Times has learnt that four militia men from Majertenya were killed while 8 others sustainted injuries in Jowhar last month after they came unter attack by rival militia forces loyal to warlord Mohamed Omar Habeeb (Mohamed Dheere).

That the attack took place was also confirmed by Mohamed Ibrahim Habsade, the relatively strongest warlord in Baidowa, during a BBC interview last week.

According to various sources in Jowhar, the incident happened shortly after scores of heavily armed militia men loyal to Abdillahi Yusuf left for Jowhar’s airport to escort an EU delegation that was expected to arrive from Nairobi.

Jowhar’s self-styled governor, Mohamed Dheere, was said to have been angered by the commissioning of non-local troops to provide security in his own town. He then ordered combatants under his command to go and arrest Abdillahi Yusuf’s militia men by force. The Jowhar-based officials of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia and international aid workers were told not to disclose the news about the clash to the media.

In a subsequent event, Mohamed Dheere arrested a number of Marehan elders who came to Jowhar to seek the release of one military officer belonging to their sub-clan from jail. The man was thrown in jail by Mohamed Dheere.
