Optimism Vs. Challenges That Still Ahead: Taking ‎The Pulse Of Somaliland’s Fledgling Democracy

Ahmed Kheyre, London, UK

President Rayale’s sudden visit to Sana'a strikes me as prudent. I am glad to see that the Somaliland government, at its highest level, is trying to diffuse a very problematic situation. I sincerely hope that a result beneficial to both Somaliland and Yemen will come out of this visit; there is the nagging doubt in the back of my mind that this visit will be used the anti-Somaliland factions as an propaganda tool, i.e., Yemen flexed its military muscle and Somaliland blinked. Far from of it, this should be an ideal time to show world opinion that Somaliland is a mature, democratic entity, willing to use dialogue to resolve issues. Unlike the rabble in the south Somalia, who tend to reach for the nearest AK47 instead of using their cerebral faculties.

However, we as Somalilanders should emphatically stress that we re more than able to defend our sovereignty, to borrow a phrase from the late Malcolm Shabbaz, "By any means necessary". I think this should be directed at Cadde Musse and his ragtag band of shifta's and political non-entities. These people are locked in the mindset of Siyad’s, "bulldozer logic", they fail to understand that close a 100,000 Somaliland martyrs and more will never allow the nation to be bullied or threatened. If they are unable to listen to reason, than those who live by the sword will perish by it.

As a Somalilander living overseas and not actually there to gauge the developments first hand, I tend to hope for the best and expect the worst. This not surprising since I had spent the first 21 years of my life under the Afweyne and his duplicitous cohorts.

Somaliland is at a critical stage in its existence. The World is tired of the south's inability to peace to its long suffering people, perhaps a dose of reality, i.e. the recognition of Somaliland will knock some sense in to them. We must do everything in our power to secure peace and stability in Somaliland.
