Hargeysa, Somaliland, May 26, 2007 (SL Times) – The Somaliland minister of Finance, Awil Ali Dualle, and the minister of Public Works, Saeed Sulub Mohamed, are scheduled to hold a press conference in Hargeysa today for the sole purpose of conducting personal attacks against Dr. Mohamed Abdi Gabose, leader of a new opposition organization called QARAN.

Earlier this week Dr. Gabose has described President Dahir Rayale as an incompetent leader who needs to be replaced.

Dr. Gabose, a veteran opposition figure in Somaliland politics, criticized president Rayale past as security officer under the former dictatorial regime of Mohamed Siyad Barre. Mohamed Hashi Elmi, another QARAN leader had questioned the morality of Mr. Rayale for sending his children abroad for schooling while most parents in Somaliland were unable to pay for the education of their children at home.

Ministers Sulub and Awil are expected to respond to Gabose’s remarks by unleashing a barrage of hostile verbal attacks against the leader of the QARAN group.

The ministers and Gabose hail from the same clan.

It has become a practice for ministers to respond to members of their clans whenever they criticize the president. Minister who don’t respond are said to risk losing their jobs.
