Asmara, 25 May 2007 – President Isaias Afwerki met and held talks in the afternoon hours today at the Denden hall with a Libyan delegation that arrived in Asmara to participate in the 16th independence anniversary of Eritrea. Secretary of the African general assembly, Dr. Abdusalam Al-Tureik, led the Libyan delegation.

On behalf of the people and government of Eritrea, President Isaias expressed his appreciation to the letter of congratulations President Moamar Al-Qadafi sent to Eritrea.

President Isaias and the delegation assessed the efforts made by Eritrea, Libya, Sudan and Chad to reinstate relations between the Sudan and Chad in accordance with the agreements reached in Tripoli.

Both sides agreed that the developments made on the issue are positive and discussed on issues of reinforcing efforts to ensure continuation of the progresses made and implement the Tripoli peace agreement.

President Isaias and the delegation also shared their ideas on what issues should be raised and ways of handling them during the CEN-SAD meeting due for next week in Libya.

President Isaias and Dr. Abdusalam agreed on the continuation of regional efforts initiated by Eritrea, Libya and Chad to solve the Dharfur issue and start talks concerning the situation.

Eritrea’s foreign minister, Mr. Osman Saleh and senior officials of the PFDJ attended the meeting.

The Libyan delegation that arrived on May 23 returned home today.
