Hargeysa, Somaliland, July 14, 2007 (SL Times) – Somaliland National Youth Organization (SONYO Umbrella) concluded a National Youth Peer `Trainers of Trainees' (TOT ) on last Thursday. The week-long training workshop was attended by 21 young people from the six regions of Somaliland.

The executive director of the umbrella organisation, Mr. Mustafe M. Khaire, who addressed the closing ceremony, mentioned that the training is one of the most important workshops facilitated by SONYO.He said, "This is one of the largest training workshops we have ever conducted. We trained 21 Youth Peer trainers for the six regions of Somaliland. These trainers will provide Youth Peer education sessions in the villages and towns of the six regions of Somaliland".

Mr Khaire stressed that this training workshop was the same calibre as the training he recently received in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He added, "I am glad that I transferred the skills and experience I gained from Bosnia and Herzegovina to 21 dedicated young people". He also announced that they have established a network for Somaliland youth peer trainers. "We established Somaliland Youth Peer Network, which will unite all youth peer trainers in Somaliland," he declared. The executive director, Mr Khaire thanked UNFPA and MOYS for their support of this training.

Sahra-kiin Abdirahman, one of the beneficiaries of the training, expressed her feeling about the workshop, "Today, I am totally different from the day we started this training. I acquired skills and knowledge that will help me contribute to the development of Somaliland youth".

Dr. Hassan Hagaa of SOLNAC and Mr. Said Omar, the director of youth department of Ministry of Youth and Sports, also encouraged and appreciated the workshop. "We are very happy with the progress of SONYO umbrella and their collaboration with Ministry of Youth and Sports. Besides this network and training, they really contributed much to the development of Somaliland youth. We will continue to support them," said Said Omar.

Finally, SONYO Chairperson, Mr. Mohamed Yusuf (Ulimo) closed the workshop with a short speech. "I am much excited to see that we now have 21 new youth trainers who have benefited from the TOT workshop. I am confident that these trainers will make the needed change.”

Mr. Mohamed Yusuf (Ulimo) encouraged the new trainers and urged them to do as much as they can to develop their people and country. He also stressed that SONYO is committed to continue its contribution to the Somaliland society, particularly, the youth.
