THE TROOP DEPLOYMENT THAT NEVER WAS

Mogadishu, 15 September 2007 - Journalists working for Shebelle Media Network have vowed not to give in intimidation after sixteen of them have been briefly detained today by forces from the transitional federal government of Somalia.

"We are not going to stop our profession as journalists because of threat and intimidation as happened today" reads a statement issued in the name of all journalists working for Shebelle Radio which an independent media house based in Somalia's volatile capital city of Mogadishu.

Before the troops came into the premises of Shebelle Media Network, there were sporadic but deliberate shooting targeted the hall where the daily editorial meeting of the radio takes.

the TFG forces have fired ten rounds at the premises of the Radio station before they came, said one journalist who doesn't want to be named because of fear.

Meanwhile, the executive chairman of Shebelle Media Network Mr. Abdmaalik Yusuf Mohamud has appealed to the Somali government to withdraw some of its forces stationed at the main gate of the radio station.

"These troops sitting our main entrance are harassing any journalists getting in or out of Shebelle Media Network and it is the same that thru TV and Radio of GBC was closed down by its management" said Mr. Maalik in a statement.

GBC is another independent media house which is now off air after Somalia's transitional government has deployed troops at its main gate and that has led all its personal to cease their jobs as the deployed forces have posed great risk to the journalists.
