Nairobi, 30 October, UN Special Representative for Somalia (SRSG), Mr. Ould-Abdallah, welcomes the peaceful conclusion of the crisis within the Transitional Federal Government (TFG).

The SRSG particularly acknowledges the conciliatory tone and spirit of the statements issued by both President Yusuf and Prime Minister Gedi during the official announcement of the latter's resignation. He calls on the TFG to continue to seek peaceful solutions to its internal differences. He encourages all leaders within and outside the country to overcome the pressing challenges facing their country particularly, the implementation of the key provisions of the Transitional Federal Charter and the conclusions of the National Reconciliation Congress.

Mr. Ould-Abdallah expresses deep concern over the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation as a result of the continued violence in Mogadishu and the subsequent displacement of the civilian population. Having spoken to a number of the leaders, he urges all parties to immediately cease violence. He further calls on them to facilitate unhindered access for the delivery of humanitarian aid. He commends the admirable work carried out by national and international humanitarian workers especially in Mogadishu.

Mr. Ould-Abdallah urges the Somali political actors and the international community to do all they can to better take into account the obligation to protect the populations.
