Hargeisa, Somaliland, 22 March 2008 - The Somaliland Minister of Education, Mr Hassan Haji Mohamud Hassan recently came before the Somaliland House of Elders (Guurti) to give the annual report on the state of education in Somaliland.
In a session chaired by the deputy chair of the House, Mr Ahmed Sheikh Nuh, the Somaliland Education minister, Hassan Haji Mohamud presented a report on the current state of education in Somaliland and its future development.
Hassan Haji Mohamud stated that in the period between this fiscal year, 2008, and 2009, will see an increase in the construction of more secondary schools throughout the country.
The minister also pointed out that by the year 2015 every Somalilander will have access to primary, middle and high school within their communities, whilst working with programmes such as the WFP to ensure support for students and their families.
The Minister also stated that it is the intention of the department to rehabilitate existing and construct new technical schools in the country.
In terms of teacher training and development, Hassan Haji Mohamud sated that more than 3000 primary school teachers have been given courses to help them improve their skills and knowledge.
In conclusion, Hassan Haji Mohamud, the Somaliland minister of Education, urged the members of the House of Elders to ensure that the rural communities of Somaliland are given more help to facilitate more educational opportunities.
Since 1991, Somaliland has managed to rehabilitate its educational sector which was badly neglected during the union with Somalia.
Prior to 1991 there was not a single university in the country, and now, Somaliland boasts at least five major places of higher learning, and a robust primary, middle and secondary schools.
