Hargeysa, July 14, 2008 – In a rare and remarkable gesture by the government of Somaliland Republic yet unrecognized by the international community. A humanitarian initiative to help the current looming and impending crisis in the Republic of Djibouti began with the donation of four thousand sheep.

THERE has been a boardroom split at listed oil exploration minnow Range Resources , with executive director Peter Landau resigning over the weekend after his relationship with managing director Mike Povey and key shareholder Leo Khouri reached boiling point.
Landau quit after clashing with Khouri in a Dubai hotel - Landau flew from London and Khouri from Melbourne for the meeting. "They rattled swords," said a source close to Landau.

On 15 May 2008, the term of office for Somaliland 's president expired without preparations being in place for a new election. For a few weeks the territory teetered on the edge of a constitutional and political crisis, as political parties argued about what to do, and donors threatened to withdraw their support for the electoral process.
Rather than resort to force, however, the parties agreed to refocus their efforts to register voters and prepare elections. A new schedule calls for presidential elections to take place by April 2009 and local council elections to follow soon thereafter.

have visited Ethiopia and Hargeysa in Somaliland as part of
a Projecting British Islam visit.
The
main aim of the visit was to build stronger partnerships
between British Muslims and the Ethiopian and Somali Muslim
leadership.
According
to a Foreign and Commonwealth Office release, the delegation
helped showcase the integral role of British Muslims in the
UK and highlighted the work being undertaken in both
countries by British organizations.

HARAF VILLAGE, Somaliland, July 22, 2008 – Water has long been a scarce resource in Somaliland , where a two- to five-hour daily walk to fetch household water is not uncommon. Collecting water has traditionally been the task of women and girls, who are therefore unable to attend school regularly.
Amira, 7, is luckier. She lives in a Haraf village, a few kilometers outside the capital of the republic of Somaliland . Haraf is one of five local villages that have been able to install water kiosks with help from UNICEF.

1. This is my third presentation to the Security Council since taking office more than nine months ago.
2. During my first presentation on 17 December, I proposed three options to the Council to address the Somali crisis. The first option was to continue “business as usual” with massive assistance including humanitarian aid as we have done for the past 18 years. During the last ten years, the official amount of assistance given to Somalia is in the vicinity of 6 – 8 billion dollars.
