SAN'A, Yemen, October 11, 2008 — About 100 migrants from Somalia are missing and feared drowned in the treacherous waters off the coast of Yemen after smugglers forced them overboard, Yemeni officials and the UN refugee agency said on Friday.
So far, 30 bodies have been found washed up on the shore of the Gulf of Aden on Friday and were buried immediately, a Yemeni security official said. Read full text..

BUDAPEST, Hungary, October 9, 2008 - NATO defense ministers agreed Thursday to send ships to escort vessels carrying food aid and protect them from piracy off the coast of Somalia, an alliance diplomat said.
The ministers agreed the ships would be sent "soon" and would work with other organizations including the European Union, the diplomat says.

BOSSASO, Somalia , October 9, 2008 – A Somali government official says troops have freed a British oil worker abducted in northern Somalia .
Energy and Minerals Ministry official Farah Abdi Hussein says one of the abductors has been killed and another wounded during a battle to free the man. The oil worker, an employee of Canada-based Africa Oil Corp., was unharmed.

| The International Bargaining Forum (IBF) has agreed to establish a 'high risk area' covering most of the Gulf of Aden with immediate effect.
New York , October 9, 2008 – The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Tuesday urging states to commit naval and air forces to the fight against piracy off the coast of Somalia .

Nairobi , 06 October 2008 – Kenyan parliament members are calling for an investigation into the ownership and destination of a shipment of Russian-made tanks and other weapons aboard a Ukrainian ship seized by pirates off the coast of Somalia . The call follows a recent report, which shows that the Kenyan government has not acknowledged a large amount of arms from Ukraine . VOA Correspondent Alisha Ryu has details from Nairobi .

Pirates Threaten To Blow Up Hijacked Ship Off Somalia |
NAIROBI, Kenya, October 11, 2008 — The pirates who hijacked an arms-laden Ukrainian tanker off the coast of Somalia threatened Friday to destroy the ship if no ransom is paid, a spokesman for the bandits said.

WASHINGTON, October 11, 2008 – Democrat Barack Obama has opened a 5-point lead over Republican rival John McCain in the White House race and expanded his support among women voters, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released Friday.
Obama leads McCain 48 percent to 43 percent among likely U.S. voters in the national poll, up slightly from a 4-point advantage for Obama Thursday. The poll has a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.

BAHRAIN : The senior British Royal Navy commander in the Gulf has called for merchant shipping to hire mercenaries in response to the increasing danger of piracy.
At a time when a record number of ships have been hijacked off Somalia , Commodore Keith Winstanley said he believed that the situation had become so serious that civilian vessels should be armed.

Dubai-based real estate developer Nakheel has announced plans to build what will become the world's tallest tower once complete, in a new project called Nakheel Harbor & Tower, according to the company's website. The centerpiece of the development will be a 3280-foot-, or one kilometer-high tower overtaking the Burj Dubai tower, which is estimated to be 2887 feet, or 880 meters, once completed.

A copy of the freight manifest appears to show contracts for the hardware were made by the Kenyan Ministry of Defense on behalf of South Sudan 's government.
