Seoul , October 24, 2008 - The government of South Korea will dispatch a survey team to Somalia next week to determine whether to send a naval vessel to the African country.
The team comprises eleven military and government officials and will be led by Brigadier General Choi Soo-yong from the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
During its five-day trip starting Monday, the team will make a stop at the headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain . It will also examine the current conditions of Somali waters, determine other nations' naval presence in the area and discuss international cooperation to stop piracy.
The Defense Ministry will make its decision after discussing the results of the survey with related ministries.
Meanwhile, the government may send a Navy destroyer to the Somali waters to protect South Korean vessels from pirates.
