Press release from the Swedish People's Liberals 08-10-30

As a friend of Somali's democracy, I am deeply shocked by the terrorist attacks which hit the country. More than 20 people were killed in coordinated suicide attacks and a Swedish working for the UN in the capital Hargeysa were injured. Fundamentalists believed to be behind the terror attacks to disrupt the upcoming elections in March 2009. The outside world must now strongly condemn the terrorist attacks while supporting Somaliland , so that they continue to follow its successful outcome of democracy, freedom of expression and transparency.

Somaliland is a democratic oasis in a region full of terrorism, religious fundamentalism and lawlessness. The country declared independence in 1991. Since 1996 there have been several peace and democratic elections have been held all of which are assessed in international reports have been implemented in a satisfactory manner. We can not let Somaliland in this precarious situation.

Birgitta Ohlsson.
