Chinese Company Wants To Invest In Somaliland

Hargeysa, Somaliland, April 5, 2014 (SL Times) – Representatives of a Chinese company called Afro China Industry that wants to invest in Somaliland arrived this week in Hargeysa. The company was welcomed by officials from the ministry of industry. Some of the people welcoming the Chinese company were waving Somaliland and China’s flags.

Joint Statement By The Ministry Of Environment And The Ministry Of Water Resources

Hargeysa, Somaliland, April 5, 2014 (SL Times) – The ministry of the environment and the ministry of water resources issued a joint statement this week. The gist of the statement is to reiterate their commitment to protecting the country’s environment and natural resources.

Somaliland: Who Bolloré Has To Talk To In Berbera

April 4 2014
Hargeysa has instructed a British lawyer to negotiate with the French group Bolloré to hammer out the details of the agreement to manage Berbera port.
Meetings began about two weeks ago between representatives of Bolloré Africa Logistics and the British law practice McCue & Partners to work on an agreement for the French group to run Berbera port. In fact, several months ago the Somaliland government instructed the firm’s main partner, Jason Daniel McCue, 44, to look for funding to develop the Berbera corridor towards Ethiopia. This is a vast project including an oil pipeline, estimated to cost a total of around $2.5 billion. This mandate was attributed to the Berbera Development Company (BDC) founded by McCue in London in April 2013 to make the Somaliland port into a logistics hub for the whole region.

US Aid To Egypt Used For Terrorism: Ethiopia Official

A Member of Ethiopia’s largest opposition party UDJ blamed Egypt’s financial assistance to al Shabaab militants in Somalia for spreading terrorism in the horn of Africa. According to MP Girma Seifu of the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) party, American aid to Egypt is being diverted to finance terrorists in Somalia as Cairo seeks to weaken Addis Ababa and stop construction of the Ethiopian Dam.

Somaliland Statesman’s Thanks As Motion Passed

Government ministers from Somaliland have thanked the people of Sheffield for recognizing their nation’s right to be an independent state.
Several dignitaries from Somaliland attended a Sheffield Council meeting on Wednesday, where members passed a motion acknowledging Somaliland’s right to self-determination. Sheffield is the first city in the world to recognize this.

Midwives and other medical experts speak out on how to end the staggering loss of life occurring in the act of giving birth.
Every two minutes a woman dies in childbirth or complications from pregnancy. It’s a sobering statistic, to be sure; staggering, even, considering that 99 percent of those deaths are preventable. Like so many ills in the world, maternal mortality can be linked to poverty and lack of education and resources. And when those issues are addressed, maternal mortality goes down.

British UN Worker Shot Dead By Rogue Soldier In Somalia

A security guard at Galkayo main Airport, 700km north of Mogadishu, shot the Briton and another male UN worker as they entered the airport on their way to Kenya, according to airport's security boss, Colonel Ali Yusuf.
Airport officer, Abdullahi Yusuf, confirmed one of the men killed was from the UK.

Hargeysa, Somaliland, April 12, 2014 (SL Times) – Drivers of vehicles who take part in projects run by the government of minerals held a demonstration in front of the ministry of minerals this week.

Sheffield Council Votes For Somaliland Independence

A council in the British city of Sheffield has voted in support of independence for the Horn of Africa’s famous non-state state, Somaliland. Somaliland declared independence from the Somali Republic in 1991 following a long-running war with the Mogadishu-based national government. It has, however, never been recognized by the UN, AU despite an ongoing campaign by its politicians, diplomats and prominent citizens.

Tourism Can Drive Sustainable Economic Growth In Somaliland

Abdikarim Salah Mohamud left Somaliland in 1988 for Melbourne and returned 23 years later to start Hargeysa Taxi.

On Thursday, March 27, at the Somaliland Imperial Hotel in Hargeysa, Dunira Strategy and local partner Horn Heritage presented the findings and recommendations of their Comic Relief-funded feasibility study. This research sought to explore heritage tourism as a driver of sustainable economic growth in Somaliland. The findings were delivered to the Minister of Sports, Youth and Tourism and his officials, along with experts, technical advisors, national media, and key stakeholders from the tourism sector.

Sillanyo’s Justice: First I Will Take Your Property, Then I Will Take You To Court

Despite all his years in the SNM, despite the many years in the opposition, Sillanyo’s years as a minister in Siyad Barre’s regime seem to have more influence in his decision-making. Let us take the way he handled Haatuf’s for example. Recently, Haatuf (Somaliland Times’ sister paper) ran several articles pointing to corruption by the minister of Mineral resources Hussein Abdi Duale. The newspaper was also critical of the wielding of a tremendous amount of power by the president’s son-in-law, Bashe Awil, even though he has no official position in the government.
