Freedom Of Expression Is Not A Gift From The Government But A Right Won Through Struggle And Sacrifice

On May 3rd the freedom of the press day was marked in Mansoor Hotel, Hargeysa. The event was attended by the independent press, civil society representatives, the minister of information, and opposition parties. The Chairman of Haatuf Media which includes both Haatuf and the Somaliland Times, Yusuf Abdi Gabobe, gave his perspective on the Somaliland government’s continuing attempts to muzzle the independent media. Mr Gabobe talked about the evolution of the media in Somaliland and the various stages it had gone through. His perspective as a former field commander during Somaliland’s war of liberation is that freedom of expression is part and parcel of Somaliland’s liberation struggle.
